The aim of this intervention was to make the students aware of the issue of choosing the power plants to be used in the future as well as the impact of these power plants on the climate.

The skills targeted were as follows: studying a document comprising several representations (photos, diagrams, graphs), working in a group, speaking in the presence of someone from outside the college.

We invited an engineer from the French multinational electric utility company, EDF, to our school to inform the students about energy, its production and the ways to save it.
First, the intervention started with  questions about energy and according to the answers given by the pupils, the intervenant chose various videos giving more information about the topic.

Then,  in a second time two main activities were carried out:

-The students were divided into groups and were given a power station to study. They had to point out the  advantages and disadvantages of that type of power station .

-Finally : the students had to think about the  measures that should be taken to make our school less polluting.

Three different fields  could be developed: economic, human and  environmental.

The students presented the results of their reflections to the other groups, which allowed everyone to conclude that each type of power plant had its advantages and disadvantages. The last activity showed the students that there was no single solution to make our school less polluting, that all the solutions proposed were defensible. The students came away with a few more arguments to form their own opinion and informed of the consequences of their choice on the evolution of the climate.
