IT22 SEC Guided tour of Taormina
27 févr. 2022In the afternoon we went to the most beautiful part of Sicily – to town of Taormina. It lies on the Mount Tauro at the Ionian sea. The aim of our cultural trip was to visit the Ancient Theatre from 3rd century BC. A Tour guide told us a lot of interesting facts about the city and theatre. It is the largest ancient theatre in Italian peninsula after the one in Syracuse. It could hold 5.000 spectators. What is visible of the Theatre today belongs entirely to the Roman reconstruction, more particularly that completed under the Emperor Hadrian in the first half of the 2nd century AD. This place underwent various adaptations in Roman times to become also an arena for gladiators. Between the 2nd and 3rd century AD the theater was transformed into an arena for hunting games with construction of a ring corridor, closed by a raised parapet, and of an underground area, used as a shelter equipment and perhaps even for animal cages. After the visit of Ancient theatre we could have a walk in the city centre and see how close the Italian peninsula is. We could see it in the distance.
The city of Taormina was the most beautiful part of the excursion. The heritage of our ancestors is great and we could all enjoy the beauty of the place and nice view of Mount Etna and Roman- Greek theatre. We bought some typical souvenirs on our way back to Pachino.
