Once the seat of famous rulers resisting enemy attacks, or the scene of important historical events, castles and chateaux still breathe fame, elegance and romance. Varied architecture and artistic styles reflecting different historical epochs offer visitors a unique experience even today. They have their mysterious stories and familiar rumors are attached to them. Slovakia is among the countries with the highest number of castles in the world.
First the pupils listened to a story about castles and chateaux. Then they had a talk about the castles that they know and had visited. After watching the presentation, they played puzzles on an interactive whiteboard - the 5 most famous castles. Next, they played the memory games about castles in 3 in groups. The teacher had created a manual that contained photos and information on where the castles were with their location. They looked for information and then pinned the location of castles on the map of Slovakia with a pin and the other end was joined with picture. This created a web and accurate information with the idea where the object is located and what it looks like. Then the teacher prepared cards for children with pictures of things that have something to do with the castle. The pictures were placed upside down. The children did not know what was there.
Gradually they turned the pictures and found English names. In the mentioned activities, the children developed skills, knowledge, creativity and orientation on the map. There was competition among children and an effort to learn something new in the field of history. Children often play with the memory game even now, and thus the heritage and history of Slovakia becomes known to them. We agreed with the children that they would tell me after the holidays which castles and chateaux they visited with their parents.
Pupils practiced language skills and knowledge. They learned new English words. The map of Slovakia is located in the first-degree corridor and it serves children everyday to strengthen their knowledge of our history.
