SPRAID is an association in La Desirade which aims to keep culture and tradition alive. Manuel who belongs to thisassociation, tought our students how to make a drum and how to play Gwoka. Gwoka is the traditional sound, the traditional music of Guadaloupe. Gwoka is a French creole term for big drum. It refers to both a family of hand drums and the music played with them, which is a major part of Guadaloupe folk music. Seven simple drum patterns form the basis of gwoka music, on which the drummers build rhythmic improvisations. Different sizes of drums provide the music. Gwoka singing is usually guttural, nasal, and rough, though it can also be bright and smooth. There are also dances that tell folk stories that are accompanied by the gwo ka drums. Our students and teachers tried to learn this rhythm too.

They learned to play the drums, some of them even the most difficult one helped by their Desiradienne friends. They gotself- confidence, because some of them were shy too and they learned the importance of keys in order to make the drum skin tighter
